The Wandering Quill

 Hello, l’m Martin!

I’m just a regular guy living a simple life, enjoying regular food and the occasional indulgence. My wife, Tammy, however, faces a unique set of challenges as she manages Hashimoto’s and thyroidism, which requires her to stick to a strict gluten-free diet. These health conditions make it tough to maintain a “normal” lifestyle, but together, we navigate the ups and downs, finding ways to support her health while still enjoying life’s little pleasures.

I’m a blogger who writes to inspire you to explore gluten-free cooking and to share my journey with Hashimoto’s, thyroidism, and celiac disease. I love swapping recipes, offering lifestyle advice, and sharing my top tips for dealing with these issues. It’s not always easy, but I’ve learned so much along the way, and I’m here to show you that a gluten-free life can be just as delicious and adventurous!

Here’s a great article I just read that explores the relationship gluten and a gluten-free diet have on autoimmune diseases.

Lifestyle Tips for People with Autoimmune Issues and Gluten-Free Living

Living with autoimmune conditions while maintaining a gluten-free lifestyle can feel overwhelming at times, but it’s entirely possible to thrive with the right approach. These lifestyle tips are designed to make daily life smoother, healthier, and more enjoyable:

1. Plan Your Meals Ahead

Planning is key when you’re juggling dietary restrictions and autoimmune symptoms. Dedicate time each week to create a menu, shop for gluten-free staples, and prep meals. This helps avoid last-minute decisions that could lead to gluten exposure or unhealthy choices.

2. Stock Your Kitchen with Essentials

Keep your pantry filled with gluten-free basics like rice, quinoa, gluten-free oats, almond flour, and canned goods. This ensures you always have safe ingredients on hand to whip up a meal, even on busy days.

3. Embrace Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Focus on whole foods that combat inflammation. Leafy greens, berries, fatty fish, turmeric, and nuts are all excellent additions to your diet. They can help manage autoimmune symptoms and support overall well-being.

4. Be a Label Detective

Reading food labels becomes second nature. Gluten hides in surprising places like soy sauce, marinades, and even candy. Look for “gluten-free” certifications or scan the ingredient list for wheat, barley, rye, or malt.

5. Prioritize Rest and Stress Management

Autoimmune conditions often flare up during periods of stress. Incorporate stress-reducing practices like yoga, meditation, or journaling into your routine. Prioritize sleep to give your body time to repair and rejuvenate.

6. Build a Support Network

Surround yourself with people who understand your journey. Join online gluten-free or autoimmune communities to exchange tips, recipes, and encouragement. It helps to know you’re not alone in this lifestyle.

7. Invest in Gluten-Free Travel Containers

Keep portable containers for snacks or meals. This is especially useful when you’re on the go and can’t find safe options nearby. Fill them with gluten-free granola, trail mix, or fresh fruit.

8. Be Prepared to Advocate for Yourself

Whether dining out or attending social events, don’t hesitate to ask questions or explain your dietary needs. Your health comes first, and most people will appreciate your clarity.

9. Experiment with Gluten-Free Cooking

Get creative in the kitchen. Try recreating your favorite gluten-containing dishes with gluten-free substitutes. Cooking at home is one of the best ways to ensure your meals are safe and delicious.

10. Celebrate Progress

Acknowledge your wins, no matter how small. Adapting to this lifestyle isn’t easy, and every step forward is worth celebrating.

Personal Story: Turning Struggles into Strength

Here’s a story about Sarah, a vibrant mother of two who was diagnosed with hashimoto’s, celiac and hypothyroidism approx eight years ago. When she was first diagnosed, she said it felt like a life sentence, asking herself how she was going to deal with this disease for the rest of her life because as far as she knew at that time, there was no cure, and there still isn’t.

She absolutely loved baking and dining out, and the thought of giving up gluten seemed unbearable. But Sarah was determined to take control of her health for her family. She started small—swapping her usual bread for gluten-free options and experimenting with flour alternatives in her baking. Some attempts were disasters (she’ll never forget the time her muffins crumbled into dust), but others were delightful surprises.

The turning point came when Sarah joined a local gluten-free support group. She learned from others’ experiences, discovered hidden gems in her town (hello, gluten-free pizza!), and even started sharing her recipes. Over time, Sarah transformed her kitchen into a gluten-free haven, complete with dedicated appliances and labeled storage.

Today, Sarah thrives on her gluten-free journey. Her kids love her famous gluten-free chocolate chip cookies, and she’s become a go-to resource in her community. What seemed like a struggle at first became an opportunity for growth, connection, and creativity.

She now loves her best gluten-free life!
